BasketK2.338 a-b

Woven, palm leaf basket (part a) and base (part b) with an orange rim around each. The tall basket has a diagonal weave that tapers to a plated, square shaped bottom. Running through the middle of the body is a thin stripe of orange and brown. The base has a circular shaped top that tapers into a plated square bottom. The base is wider then the bottom of the basket.

Traditional Hausa carved design. Natural colour with grey lines, possibly in pencil, and dusted with white powder (?). Part (a), base has five carved parallel lines with scallop design above, all around near top. Two deeply carved lines near base, and base carved into nine quadrants, cross hatched on four, lines in the corners, and central square has diamond and lines carved within. Lid, part (b), has scallop design near rim, two parallel lines, and band of short parallel diagonal lines with horizontal cuts, two parallel lines, and cut-out interwoven oval shapes, with carved circles. Large center circle with four carved concentric rings and a cut-out center.

Large calabash bowl with a semi-spherical shape. The outside of the bowl was dyed dark red. The entire bowl has shallow engraved design of various geometric patterns of lines, triangles and diamonds. There is a solid red stripe along the rim.

Panel of off-white, undyed damask fabric with a geometric pattern gathered and sewn with palm leaf raffia thread. The fabric is gathered to a point at one end with the four corners ungathered at the other end. One edge is machine-stitched with off-white thread and strands of off-white string are attached at regular intervals along the same edge.
