Offering3396/19 a-b

Joss paper offerings in the form of a shirt (part a) and pants (part b). The paper shirt has grey, off-white and orange-yellow polka dots on a deep brown-red background. The collar is stapled on, and there is a faux pocket and tie with two shiny dot stickers. The short paper pants have burgundy with red parrots on a light off-white background, with blue-grey, burgundy, black.

Rain Cover3396/25

Rain cover or galmo composed of oiled paper folded into a v-shape with accordion folds on either side. The closed pointed end is wrapped with a small piece of oiled paper, and tied with fibre. A length of twisted cord runs from the tip, through the centre of the folded paper, and out the open end. It is tied together to form a loop, with several smaller loops within. The paper opens like an umbrella, and is cone-shaped when open.

Lithograph print on rectangular, off-white paper. Close up design of avataq, sealskin float, in portrait orientation. Float done in light yellow. Front flippers have jagged black line across them, depicting fur, and claws. Long tie, done in light yellow, looped around back flippers. Tie disappears under body and appears again on right side of float, curled in a circle. Majority of body covered in black abstract, curved triangle designs. Bright red syllabics overtop of embossed bird-like figure, in bottom right corner. Syllabics handwritten in pencil overtop of embossed symbol of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative, in bottom left corner. Beneath avataq design is the title, print type, edition number, 10/50, year and artist signature. All handwritten in pencil. “08-2” handwritten in pencil on back of print, in bottom left corner. Faint imprint of words, and an infinity symbol, on back of print, in bottom right corner.

Sari3374/1

Wedding sari in off-white crepe with embroidered designs in gold thread and gold sequins. Edged along three sides with an ornate band composed of three rows of gold sequins with heavy gold embroidery in between. The sari is divided into eleven panels, four full and seven partial, with a section of undecorated crepe fabric at the end. In each panel, extending in from the sides, are triangles composed of small flower-like designs - small circles with loops around the outer edge, and a four-petaled design within. Both ends are finished with a zigzag stitch in gold thread.

Hand puppet of a 'Minelvina' character (doll-like in form). The fabric body is light pink. Her face is white, and facial features are drawn. She has black eyes and nostrils, and a red mouth. She wears a long, shiny white dress that is gathered at the waist. Her feet are black fabric boots. Her red-brown hair is worn down, and worn under a white veil that extends the full length of her body.

Hand puppet of a 'Boi (bull) Coração' character. The brown bull is carved from wood and covered with fabric. It has carved small ears, black horns, and a long black tail. Black eyes and nose, and nostrils are painted on. The bull has a silver applique bridle on its head. In place of legs, a tube of blue with red and yellow floral fabric extends down, with orange-yellow lace border, which is where the hand is inserted.

Hand puppet of a 'Capiroto' (devil) character. He has red skin with long skinny black horns that are tipped with red. He has a pointed chin with small goatee, large nose, circular black eyes, thin black moustache, and an open mouth with white and black teeth and missing teeth. His cheeks, nose and forehead are contoured with black. He wears a shiny black and red tunic with matching shiny black and red cape. One cuff of the tunic is red, and the other black. The fabric covered foam tubes are adhered to the hands. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

She has black skin, almond-shaped black eyes with the left pupil missing, a small triangular nose, an open down-turned mouth with bright red lips, and adhered white hair. Her fabric body / tunic is black with large pink flowers, and sleeves of red and white gingham. The fabric covered foam tubes are adhered to the hands. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.
