Cup1331/7 a-d

Shallow cup with rounded sides. Foot is a molded face with protruding chin and horns that the dish sits on. On side below the chin are twelve incised Japanese characters. Interior of cup is decorated around centre with a painted face; otherwise, the cup in unglazed and is very polished. Cloth (b) and box (c-d).

Violin Case3126/1

Basketry violin case. Case in the general shape of a violin, with a long neck and widening of the upper and lower bouts. Lid is attached with two small decorative metal hinges at back, and closes with a hide tie at front. Case is heavily decorated on the exterior with red and black cherry bark and grass beading, in a checkered pattern. A woven cedar bark handle is attached below the front tie closure, attached on one side by a hide loop and the other by a brown and yellow shoelace.

Violin3126/2 a-b

Violin (part a) and bow (part b). Violin has a scroll, four pegs, and an unmarked fingerboard with two strings remaining and attached to the tailpiece, one metal and one catgut. Tailpeice is fixed to the instrument by wire wrapped around a wood peg on the bottom of the body, and no bridge remains. Chinrest is small and made of painted but unvarnished wood, attached by two metal pins that wrap around to the back of the body. Violin is coloured rich red-brown and yellow-brown with a high-shine lacquer. Bow stick and tip are made of a single piece of dark brown wood, with a two-tone metal endscrew. Bow frog is made of ebony with a small inset circle of abalone shell on either side for decoration. (No bow hair remains attached.)

Noh Mask3118/1

Noh Okina (翁) mask, depicting an old man. Mask is carved from wood, with exaggerated wrinkles on brow and cheeks, down-turning eyes, a wide nose, and incised lines on upper lip indicating a mustache. The mask is painted light grey with black accents and a red mouth. The separated chin (切顎; kiriago) is attached with strands of fibre on either side of the mouth, with a long beard, possibly of horse hair, falling from chin and lower lip. Bushy circles of fibre above the eyes represent eyebrows. A long, cream coloured, braided tie is attached to either side of the mask. The inside is painted black.

Glass bead. The piece is short and tubular, with a machine-faceted surface and hand cut facets around the narrowed tip of both edges. The exterior is clear, shiny glass, with a blue interior core. A small hole is bored through the centre.
