Wooden ikenga figure. The figure has a conical base with a cylindrical torso. The torso/body is decorated with incised zigzag lines and raised sections of wood with grooves around the edges of the midsection. The figure’s neck is long and wrapped at the base with a thin, degraded strip of woven fabric which is knotted at the back of the neck. The figure’s head is rounded in the back but with a triangularly shaped face including a pointy, beaked nose and sharply pointed small chin and lips. The eyes are stylized slits on the edges of the face, and attached to the sides of the head are two large, curved horns. The horns are v-shaped and point backwards away from the face. There is a large crack in the figure extending from the neck to the base on the left side.

Carved, wooden ikenga figure. The figure has two conical-shaped, short legs that attach to a body consisting of two conically carved shapes without points (frustums) which taper inwards to join a central, larger cylinder. The two outer sections are incised with linear grooves, while the central section is carved with two triangular and two rectangular shapes in-filled with small, carved divots. The figure’s neck is long and rounded. The figure’s face is long with a pointed, flat-bottomed chin, small mouth, large flat nose and large, deeply carved eyes. The high forehead is slopping and angular. Extending directly upwards from the back of the head are two pointed, large horns running parallel to each other.

Wooden ikenga figure. The figure stands on a circular base, from which rises the central rectangular post that supports the head of the figure, surrounded on four sides by bent v-shaped, rectangular posts. The head is very large and flat with an angular face. The face consists of a square chin with a wide, open mouth. Above the mouth the face slopes up and back and is decorated with incised square shapes. The top of the face is adorned with two carved circular protrusions, one in the centre of the face and one on the right side of the face with a space for the missing third on the left side of the face. There is also a circular protrusion on the top of the head in the back. The two side protrusions are part of the two large, curved horns (right side is broken) that extend outwards from the top of the face. The upper sections of the horns are wide and carved to be hollow in the interiors, while the lower sections are narrower and solid. The upper sections of the horns attach to a rounded, flat piece that sits on top of the central bulge of the face.

54 beads strung on a metal wire, with metal clasp at one end and loop on the opposite. Each bead is carved from tusk and shaped into a oblong orb. The surface of the beads has been polished to a shine. Colour varies in each bead, and is often mottled, from dark amber to light yellow. (Part b is a detached bead. Parts c-d are the old clasp: two round plastic tube-shaped pieces that screw together, and each has a hole in the end.)

Short sleeved dress in the colours of the New Caledonian flag. The neck of the garment is rounded, with a short vertical opening at back, closed by three buttons. Thin, decorative strips of red and green fabric are sewn around the chest and upper back area. Sleeves culminate in elastic gatherings, with fringe at the edges. The skirt has a dropped waist with a fringed hem.

Short-sleeved, light green cotton shirt with dark green floral design and five white plastic buttons. Shirt opens at the front, with button closure. Neck has a starched collar. A large pocket is sewn on at the front left chest. Sleeves are hemmed. Small slits at both sides at bottom hem.

Short-sleeved, light green cotton dress with dark green floral design. Neck is square at back, V at front. Sleeves culminate in elastic with gathered and pleated cuffs. Waist has four small fabric panels per side, sewn into the hem. Bottom hem of dress is scalloped. All hems and fabric ends have been machine sewn with green thread.

String puppet (marioneta) of the character Triton, Greek god, messenger of the seas. Puppet is paper mache, with an orange face, large plastic green eyes, heavy brow, long drooping nose, large lips and pointed chin. Scalp is blue-green with several small fins. Neck is a ball that allows the head to rotate in all directions. Chest is human-like, while back is covered by several large fins. Hands are orange with 4 fingers each. Bottom of body is made up of clear plastic tubing and masses of white, textured plastic sheeting. Puppet is controlled by a set of large plastic covered wooden sticks, with marionette strings attached to the head, shoulders and hands.

String puppet (marioneta) of the character Neptune with carved wood face, a pointed beard tipped with a painted shell, pink lips, a long nose, black plastic eyes, sharply defined brow, short forehead and prominent ears. Small shells cover the scalp. A thin wooden stick protrudes from the back of the head and is the only method of controlling the puppet. Puppet’s torso is paper mache. Arms and hands are wood. Torso and arms are covered by decoupage in patterns coloured blue and red, while hands are painted light blue. The creature’s bottom is made entirely of thin, white, flowing plastic sheeting. A long blue cape attaches at the shoulder and hip by a beaded cross-chest belt and falls the length of the plastic bottom. Puppet’s hands and face are delicately carved and detailed. The trident (part b) is aluminum, with a long staff and three pronged head. The whole is wrapped with brass wire, with clear beads threaded on intermittently. Each prong is topped by a gold triangle.

Large bowl with a bulging body. The wide midpoint recedes toward a narrow mouth at top and small base at bottom. The lower half of the bowl is painted orange and glazed, with no decoration. Around the midpoint is a strip of brown with a light coloured broken zigzag motif. Above this is painted a base colour of light brownish-grey, covered with linear designs in dark brown and orange. The interior is undecorated and unglazed.
