Shadow puppet of Mu Guiying from “Journey to the West". Female warrior and heroine of the Yang Saga. Flat shadow puppet made from semi-translucent cut, punched and painted hide. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. The puppet (part a) has a large detachable head (part b). Her face is cutout, and outlined in black with small angled red lips. She wears a large headdress with green, red or pink pompoms, and large red tassels hanging from the front. Two large light brown pheasant feathers extend out the top of the headdress and trail behind her. She has a bow and quiver full of arrows on her side. She wears four large green with red, yellow, orange and blue flags(?). Her body armour is very detailed with lots of punched-out patterns, vertical bands of alternating red and green padding, and yellow fringe across her chest and arms. Operated by three rods.

He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals, shadow puppet character from "Journey to the West" with separate head (part b) and lotus flower (part c). She is depicted with a cutout face, and long black hair that is partially tied up on her head, and then the rest extends down. Her hair is tied with red ribbon and decorated with flowers. She wears a pink robe with various coloured cloud(?) decorations. Her pants are light green, exposing only the tip of her red shoes with pink pompom on the toes. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The lotus flower is white and pink, and the stem and leaf are bright green. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Sha Wujing (Evil Sandman/Sandy) shadow puppet character from "Journey to the West", with separate head (part b), weapon accessory (part c), two large bundles (parts d-e). Sha Wujing wears a monk's robe of a yellow, green, red and black hexagon pattern. He has curly black facial hair as well as long curly black hair, which is tied back by a green headband topped with a crescent shape and tied with red ties. He wears a large red hoop in his ear, and a large brown beaded necklace. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The monk's spade or crescent moon spade (part c) consists of a long pole with a flat spade-like blade on one end and a crescent-shaped blade with two orange loops on the other. Operated by one rod. With him are two bundles, both dark green rectangles outlined in red and light green. Bundle (part d) has a blue bag and large yellow straw hat, and bundle (part e) has a yellow bag.

Tang Seng (Buddhist Monk from the Tang dynasty) shadow puppet character from "Journey to the West", with separate head (part b) and khakkhara or monk staff (part c).His face is cutout and outlined in black, and he wears a Buddhist crown on his head with large green ties. He wears a cloak and interior dress indicated by the different sleeves. The cloak and one sleeve have a red brick pattern with light green outline, and the other sleeve is solid yellow. He wears flowing green pants, which mostly cover his black shoes. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The khakkhara has a yellow shaft with a spear(?) tip at one end, and four repeating concentric designs (blue, red, green, red) and rings on the other end. Operated by one rod.

The face is cutout and outlined in black, with curved eyebrows and a small angled red lip. She wears an ornate headdress with a section of fabric extending down from a dragon(?)'s mouth. A small three-pronged spear extends from the crown, and a small phoenix(?) sits on top. Large red pompoms and green pompoms adorn the top, and two large red tassels extend down on either side of the face. A long neck acts as a tab to insert into the collar of a body.

His face is red, he has lying silkworm eyebrows, a red phoenix eye, and a five-strand beard. The headdress has a cloth section which extends upwards, with another section extending down the back with alternating red and green diagonal stripes. The top is adorned with many small pompoms and one large green pompom. A long neck acts as a tab to insert into the collar of a body.

They wear a full-length red robe decorated with circular floral decorations, and their hair is tied up in a bun, which is wrapped in a green scarf and tied with red ribbon. They wear black shoes with green cloud-like designs on the toes and heels, and red edging. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. Basket of flowers has a handle, which extends down into a tripod stand. There is one large red flower, smaller red or yellow flowers and lots of green leaves. There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, shadow puppet character from "Journey to the West" with separate head (part b) and fly-whisk (part c). His face is cutout, and outlined in black. He has a long, pointed black beard. He wears a blue scarf(?) on his head with the yin yang symbol. Dressed in olive green full-length robes with wide sleeves and decorated with the yin yang symbol. He is depicted with a sword on his back, black with a green hilt and red handle, and two red tassels hanging down. He wears black shoes, with green decorations on the toes and heels, and red edging. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The fly-whisk has a thin blue shaft, and then tied to the end is a length of hair(?) or feather(?). There is a small loop for the puppet's fingers.

Han Zhongli or Zhongli Quan, one of the Eight Immortals, shadow puppet character from "Journey to the West" with separate head (part b) and magic fan (part c). He has long black hair, with two buns tied with red ribbon on his head. He face is heavily lined in red, and he has a long black beard and moustache. He wears a long purple-pink robe with circular green vine and flower designs, bordered by red. On his feet, he wears black shoes with green details on the toes and heels, and red edging. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips. Operated by three rods. The fan is orange-yellow with diagonal alternating bands of red and green on the blade, and a red fire-like detail on top. There is a small loop at the end of the shaft for the puppet's fingers.
