Mask2960/36

Wooden mask has a broad, somewhat flat face, with a receding chin that is topped by a large protruding lower lip painted red. The nose is large and narrow, accented with red paint, and bridge extending to top of mask. The eyes are small and round with viewing holes bored through the wood. The face is bordered by a carved line running from brow, around cheeks to lips, from which the sides of the mask drop sharply away. The head is covered by a black hat or hair. The interior of the mask is slightly concave. Two small holes are bored through the upper sides of the mask and are fitted with a thin brown string.

Bowl2960/7

Clay bowl with wide mouth and rounded sides that incline sharply to a small round base. The interior is decorated with white and brown lines of varying widths in linear patterns, on top of a red slip base. The overall finish is matte. The exterior has a more intricate and smaller pattern of lines in varying widths and of a dark brown, on a light yellow background. The outer surface is shiny.

Bowl2960/4

Clay bowl with wide round mouth and curved sides that recess to a small round base. The interior is painted in a matte finish and decorated sparsely with brown and white lines in patterns of large crosses and smaller knots. The exterior has a shiny finish over an intricate design of thin brown lines surrounded by thicker lines marking a larger and simpler pattern. Small shapes in orange further embellish the design.

Basket2960/32 a-b

Large woven basket has a relatively short bulbous body (part a), angling sharply in and upwards at the base. The round pedestal foot sits inside the body perimeter, only partially visible in profile. It is decorated with a single ring of cowrie shells. To the basket are attached four strips of hide, each with three rows of cowrie shells attached. The strips are long and thin, holding the lid (part b) to the body of the basket. The lid is round and wide, with an inset lip allowing it to sit snugly on top of the basket body. The lid rises to a high centre protrusion. Body and lid are decorated with dyed dark brown and red zigzags and concentric upsidedown Vs.

Ceremonial Paddle2960/45

Carved and painted hardwood paddle with a long leaf shaped blade. At the throat on the dorsal surface is carved a stylized human with large headdress, sharp red teeth, broad nose, long thin neck, arms, hands and fingers. The figure is painted red and black. The tip of the blade on this side is red. On the ventral surface is a long raised and painted spine painted red and black, with thin arms and fingers again carved at the throat. The tip is painted black and red with a V-shaped design. The paddle’s shaft is long and straight, narrowing slightly toward the anterior end, and has no embellishment.

Batik Stamp2960/42

Large wooden batik textile stamp. The base of the stamp is carved into two lines of four repeating patterns, showing an intricate design of a large oblong flower in the centre surrounded by foliage, and an enclosed border of vines. The top and bottom of the stamp have two straight lines of small dots. The stamp is made out of a thick piece of rectangular wood, with a wide rectangular handle on the centre back attached by nails. The piece shows traces of red dye on its base, sides and handle.

Small lime bottle with elaborate lid. The bottle (part a) is cylindrical, with a thick, round base and a flaring lip. The middle portion is light brown wood with a delicately incised decoration in patterns of triangles, circles, waves and lines. The lid (part b) is round and fits snuggly into the mouth of the bottle. It holds a carving of a horse being ridden by a man, with a smaller man crouched on his head. A snake balances on top of the smaller man, its body hanging straight down to where it merges into the horse.

Round bracelet made out of four similarly sized, curved pieces of ivory. The pieces are attached by inset strips of wood and four small, decorative nails per piece, visible on the top and bottom of the bracelet. The sides of the bracelet are squared.

Shawl2960/33

Heavy wool recangular mantle consisting of two identical panels sewn together down the middle. The colours are, from outside to centre: red brown, a strip of coloured lines running vertically, a vertical panel in a circle motif of red and white with a grey line running down the centre, dark brown, a wider panel in a diamond motif of red and white with a yellow line running down the middle, a second strip of coloured vertical lines, a thick line of red brown. This arrangement continues in the opposite to the edge.

Textile2960/35

Long narrow cloth with numerous coins attached at the bottom. Cloth is a light yellow-brown colour, with horizontal stripes dyed in black, green, yellow, blue, green and red on its lower portion. Beneath these are coins attached to thread, dangling from the bottom of the textile, 53 in all. Each coin is round with a square hole in the centre through which the thread is attached. The coins have Chinese(?) characters imprinted on them.
