Gouache paint on thin cardboard. The archangel Michael fills the picture, facing front, feet turned to the sides, hands gripping a raised sword and striped scabbard. His head is large with prominent eyes, brow and nose, and a multi-coloured halo. Figure wears an elaborate robe and armour with decorative stripes and circular patterns. Large wings show behind and above his shoulders, with fine patterning in dots, zigzags and stripes. A border has been painted around the image at the edges of the cardboard in dark orange and grey.

Madonna and Child3188/4

Gouache paint on thin cardboard. Central figure in image is the Virgin Mary, with the Christ child to her left, both facing front. Mary’s gaze is directed outward, with prominent eyes, nose and brow, a halo surrounding her head. She wears a grey robe with a circular motif at the shoulder and stripes on the side. Her hands are crossed in front of her, one holding a sash, the other on the child's chest. The boy points one hand to the left, and in the other he holds a book. He wears a striped robe, with decorative neck. His gaze is directed to the left, and eyes are prominent. In the top corners of the image sit a man and a woman shown from chest up, both with halos and circular motifs on their robes. They look toward Mary. Writing occurs in a panel at the bottom.

Portrait of Haile Selassie. Gouache paint on thin cardboard. Portrait of a man fills the picture, shown from the waist up. Figure has a large head with dark hair and beard, and large eyes and nose. He wears a dark jacket with a green sash and medals on his chest, with a striped robe on his shoulders. Both hands grip a staff in front of him. Two crosses sit behind him in the upper corners of the painting, striped flags of Ethiopia flying below them. Cotton stitching in green and orange surround the portrait, along the edges of the cardboard. The back of the cardboard has a black and tan marbled pattern.

Four Figures3188/2

Painting on vellum. Image shows four standing hunters facing right, two large green snakes, two quivers of light blue arrows and three red and white bows carried among them. The men all wear loincloths, three white and one red. Bodies are drawn with black ink and red paint outlines, filled with a wash of black mixed with yellow-orange paint. The background is dark yellow, and a border of unpainted vellum surrounds the scene. Amharic inscription along right side of scene (translates to: "When the Negroes returned after killing basilisk").

Painting on vellum. Image is of a male walking at the front of a small procession, holding a blue and gold shield (gasha) in one hand and a spear in the other, wearing an animal skin cape over his green striped robe, and a curved knife on his belt. Empress Taytu, wearing a crown, walks behind, with a red, fringed umbrella held overhead, wearing a dark blue cloak and a garment with an embroidered hem. Next is a woman in a long white robe with a scarf, carrying a small container; then another man wearing an animal skin cape, holding a spear, with a curved knife hanging from his belt. A group of 5 men are mostly hidden from view behind him, holding spears. The background is dark orange-brown, with the figures and border outlined in green.

Large ceramic cup with handle. Body is round, bulbous at bottom and narrowing toward the shoulder. Rim flares out slightly and a handle spans from its edge to the body’s bottom. Foot is short, inset, and round. Designs have been incised onto the shoulder, in twist and pine needle patterns. Cup has a glossy shine, and is glazed blue at top, fading to green on the shoulder and orange on the body to the foot. Interior is uniformly blue.

Pot3222/4 a-b

Round ceramic pot with lid. Pot has a tall, round body, flaring from the small circular foot toward the wide shoulder, where sit two slab handles on each side. Neck is short, with a thick rim. Twist designs are incised around the shoulder. Surface has a glossy shine and is glazed green on rim and shoulder, and orange on body and foot. Lid (part b) is circular and rounded toward the top centre, where a squat handles sits. Incised twists encircle the lid. Colour at top of lid is orange, fading to green toward bottom. Interior of pot and lid is a shiny brown.

Temple cloth. Textile has block printed patterns all over the surface. Background is pale purple-pink, with dense designs in deep purple. Images of deities, people engaged in various activities, crocodiles, bovines, birds, circular decals and a gramophone are spaced across most of the cloth. Edge decorations are lines of triangles, floral motifs, and chevrons.
