Teardrop-shaped, green velvet hat with a high rigid band. Pointed end has large circular fabric ornament, decorated with taupe leaf-shaped sequins and burgundy sequins. Hat heavily decorated with silver and burgundy sequins and royal blue beading in a diamond pattern around the band, and around the top of the hat. The top is decorated with a paisley-style design. All of the beaded and sequin elements are outlined by twisted metal thread.

Small square-shaped hat with a pointed top. Hat has four sides, now folded flat on opposing sides. The exterior is black, and the band is decorated with a repeating scalloped design in off-white silk(?) thread. The upper triangular area of each side is decorated with an embroidered paisley design in off-white silk(?). The hem is edged with a dark black-blue trim. The interior is lined with a bright red fabric.

Pleated, circular cape made from animal hide. Front centre of cape has large orange-brown triangular section with equally sized plain triangular sections on either side. Rest of cape has thinner orange-brown triangles spread throughout. All sections of cape covered in plain fringe, except for the large plain triangle to the right of the front orange-brown triangle section. Fringe is heavier on the back. Long hide strips on either side of neckline.

Hand puppet of the Joey the Clown character, from a Punch and Judy puppet show. Head and hands carved from wood. Hands are beige. Face is painted white with a red nose, lips and triangles on the cheeks and forehead. Red lines and dots are painted around the light blue eyes. Black eyebrows painted in a semi-circle over eyes. Three large, black pom-poms glued to top of head for hair. Character is wearing a white ruffled shirt over its white fabric body. Shirt has frilled collar, epaulettes and hemline. Ruffles are trimmed with silver, red and dark blue wavy lines. Sun-like shape in centre of shirt. Shape is a red circle, with a dark blue outline and silver triangles protruding from it. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening. Operated by inserting hand inside the body of the puppet to control the head and hands.

Sausage machine prop (part a) and sausage links (part b), from a Punch and Judy puppet show. Sausage machine is an open-backed wooden, rectangular box with plastic tubes on the top and front. Tube on box front is thinner than the one on top. Semi-circular sticker above tube on front reads “Sausomatic.” Word is written in rainbow colours. Yellow crank handle on left side of box. Sausage links are stuffed and made of pink fabric. Seven sausages in link. Operated by inserting sausage links into tube at front of machine, from the back, and manually feeding them through. Handle would be cranked simultaneously.

Hand puppet of the Toby the Dog character, from a Punch and Judy puppet show. White, fuzzy fabric body with black spots across it. Has a stuffed tail on its back, a stuffed leg on either side of its body and two long, floppy ears on its head. Wearing a dark blue ruffled collar, with a wavy line of silver trim along the bottom edge. Mouth, eyes and nose carved from wood. Heart shaped nose is painted black. Eyes have large black pupils and dark brown irises, with white spots in them. Mouth interior painted black and pink. Edges of mouth interior are beige and have teeth painted on them in white. Metal ring along top edge of body opening. Operated by inserting hand inside the body of the puppet to control its jaw movements.

Nose, cheeks and chin are rosy. Lips are red and eyes are light blue. Small red dots in the corners of the eyes. Character is wearing blue eye shadow, has long lashes and large black eyebrows. Dark brown lines on face to highlight nostrils, mouth, chin, furrowed brow, shadows under eyes and ears. Judy has short strands of yellow yarn for hair and is wearing a white, lace-like bonnet secured with a red checkered bow. Character is wearing a light blue, white-dotted dress, with lacy cuffs, and a white, lace-like apron secured with two red checkered ties. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening.

Puppet Prop3350/13

Puppet voice prop called a swazzle, from a Punch and Judy puppet show. Made of two thin, rectangular pieces of aluminum wrapped in cotton tape. Cotton looped around the exterior with a single strand running through the middle, separating the two pieces of aluminum. Centre of metal pieces bend outwards slightly, giving the swazzle an irregular oval-shape. Bends also create space between the metal pieces and central piece of cotton tape separating them. Thin looped thread attached to exterior cotton tape on the left side.

Hand puppet of the Crocodile character, from a Punch and Judy puppet show. Head carved from wood and painted dark green. Lower jaw painted off-white. Facial features outlined with black paint. Eyes have large black pupils and light yellow irises, outlined in gold. Sections of white teeth nailed to bottom edge of upper jaw. Mouth interior painted black, orange and yellow. Long pink, fabric tongue inside of mouth. Crocodile’s fabric body is emerald green down the back and off-white on the front. Bent fabric legs on either side of fabric body, where it meets the wooden head. Fabric is glued and stapled to head. Metal ring along top edge of body opening. Operated by inserting hand inside the body of the puppet to control its jaw movements.
