Shark Headdress2736/8

Realistic representation of shark head is painted white and black with carved black eyes and red gill lines. Worn with nose pointing upwards, the beard and the mout,h made up of the jaw and teeth of a shark, are therefore facing forward. The headdress has long strands of grass fibres hanging from the sides and a foam lining around the interior rim. The jaw is held in with nails and two strands of woven synthetic rope are knotted and pulled through holes in the wood.

Gourd-shaped, gray clay owl has hand painted body details in brown and red over a thick creamy white slip. Body is completely covered with overlapping feather pattern and large red spots. Bulging pupils are set atop white within a large red circle outlined in brown. Beak hangs down front to touch bottom lip.

Egg-shaped gray clay owl, with round hole in base, is hand painted in brown and orange over a creamy beige burnished background. Overlapping feather pattern covers lower body with slanting striped wings and fanned stripes on the tail, and head has curly U-shaped feathers overall. Eyes are surrounded with v-shaped lashes.

Vintage, barrel-chested orange clay owl is hand painted with thick black detailing over a white background. Leaf-like feathers are scattered over most of the body while the large extended vertical wings and broad tail are plain on one side and have long banded feathers on the other. Eyes bulge out with short thick eyelashes and beak is snubbed.

Hand coiled red clay pottery owl. Details are hand painted in brown and red on a beige slipped and polished background, base is unpainted. Thick net-like feather pattern covers most of body. Upper side of wings and tail are striped, bottoms are spotted. Pointed conical ears are tipped in brown. Similar eyes are less pointed and fringed with eyelashes. Hooked top beak joins bottom lip. Stripes decorate top of head.

Mask2735/4

Beaded red and black elephant mask. Two long panels of black cotton fibre with red bordering, red, white, blue and multi-colour bead decoration, and burlap backing are sewn together at one end to form a stocking face mask, with large eye openings and large round protruding ears, that pulls over the top of the head. Attached to the top is a large plate-shaped basketry headdress with white canvas covering the flat top and red and black textile on the sides and bottom. Several figures with beaded facial features are attached to top brim and slope down to bottom of cap.

Dark brown, round ceramic container has a figure, wearing a grass skirt and neck ring, squatting on the top. Pot and figure have similar decorative patterning of connecting bands of two, three, or four lines of tiny oval impressions, at one spot on the pot forming a diamond shape. There is a round opening in the pot below the rear end of the figure and another hole at the top of the brimmed headdress.

Dark brown, round ceramic container has a figure crouched frog-like on the top. Upper half of pot and ridged back of figure have the same decorative geometric patterning of raised dots connected with bands of two, three or four lines of tiny oval impressions. There is a round opening at the rear end of the figure and a smaller hole at the top of its elongated ringed head.
