Jar3433/11 a-b

Small jar (part a) with a lid (part b). The jar's form is somewhat hourglass-shaped, with more proportional upper and lower sections, with concave midsection. The lower section has a slight taper in to the base. In the upper section, there are three flattened areas marked with rows of texture. The rim is brown, just below the lip. The interior of the jar and underside of the lid are a light grey-blue. The lid is flat, circular and has a flange to fit within opening of the jar.

Square ceramic tile with floral motifs painted on front. Surface is glazed. Background is cream. Red-brown flowers, with layered petals, in the four corners. Different types of flowers painted in dark yellows and red-browns across entire tile. All flowers have light green stems and leaves. Raised grid across back of tile. In centre of grid three diagonal ridges are stamped. Manufacturer’s mark, Mintons China Works, stamped in between the ridges. Inscription on back.

Tile3401/21

Square ceramic tile painted white with dark green designs overtop. Surface and sides are glazed. Dark green border on all sides with white interlocking lines inside. Central design of a white 16-petal chrysathemum flower in a dark green circle, surrounded by two dark green circles. The dark green circle closer to the top edge has cherry blossom motifs, the circle closer to the bottom depicts the three-taloned lung dragon. Surrounding the circles are designs of leaves, vines and branches. Those designs are done with stippling. Five horizontal ridges on back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Mintons China Works, stamped in between ridges.

Square ceramic tile with geometric and floral motifs painted on front. Surface is glazed, sides are partially glazed. Background of tile painted black. Across front are three rows of dark brown circles, outlined in dark yellow. Inside of circles are stylized diamonds with flowers, done in dark yellow. Between the lines of circles are rows of the same stylized diamonds with flowers, but with fewer petals than the ones inside of the circles, done in dark yellow. Between each diamond is a dark yellow dot. Sides of tile undecorated. Five horizontal ridges on back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Maw & Co., stamped along ridges.

Square ceramic tile painted white with dark blue designs overtop. Surface is glazed, sides are partially glazed. Plain line border around all edges. Tile divided into four sections by a plain cross. Each section has an identical design. Diamond in centre of squares with a sunflower motif in their centres. The four corners of the four square sections have triangles with semi-circles and diagonal lines inside of them. Raised grid across entire back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Minton' Hollins & Co., stamped on back.

Square ceramic tile with floral and geometric motifs carved in relief across front. Surface is glazed. Brown-orange flowers with offshoots in each corner. Large rectangle-like shapes along each tile edge, with semi-circles carved out from each side. Rectangles have floral motifs inside. Corners of the rectangles overlap one another, forming squares. Inside each square is a light blue flower. Central design of tile is a square-like shape with round protuberances on each side. Inside of the square-like shape are floral designs. Small circle and large circular outline imprinted on back of tile. Inscriptions on back with manufacturer's name, T & R Boote.

Orange-brown border around edges with repeating pattern of diamonds with dots inside them. Squares in the border, at the four corners, with triangles and dots inside of them. Central design of two large light blue flowers with a light green leaf behind them. Small groupings of off-white and red-pink flowers surrounding the blue flowers. Six vertical ridges on back of tile. Inscription on back.

Figure3461/4

A wooden carving of a bird with painted motif around its entire body. It has a long narrow neck, a smooth rounded body, a protruding triangular tail and one thick leg that flares outward at the bottom. Figure is drilled onto a wooden base. Head, neck, leg and base are painted dark brown-red. Main body painted dark red and is covered entirely in white hatching. Throughout white hatching are yellow-brown birds with dark red eyes, and white and dark red motifs on their necks, tails and through their middles. Area with painted designs, all carved in relief, trimmed with band of black and dark red lines. The bird’s head has white eyes and a white outline for its mouth.

Wooden humanoid mask with dark brown-red cord attached to the top, imitating hair. Head is thin and rectangular, painted black, with two pronounced eyebrows, outlined in light yellow. Eyes below are thin, oval-shaped, and outlined in red and light yellow paint. Face has a sharp hooked nose above an open, puckered mouth, painted red. Nose and curves of the cheeks are highlighted with light yellow paint. Formline motifs around the mouth and on the cheeks. Done in red and light yellow. Back of mask is hollowed out. Holes in mask for eyes and mouth. String and nails are attached to interior for hanging.

Shawl3448/20

Long rectangular white shawl woven from cotton(?) with open-weave fringe on both ends. The front is embroidered in white silk with large flowers, stems, and circular buds. Some light blue and black thread has been woven into a piece of the fringe.
