Description

Brown glazed cotton headdress. The headdress is rectangular with all sides hemmed. On one end is a separate piece of cloth joined with a flat seam to body of cloth, glazed side down. White cord loops are sewn to corners. The subtle pattern has a tendril motif visible through the fabric.

History Of Use

Worn lengthwise over head, one end hanging down back. End with loops folded back over top from the front with fold on seam. Loops tied under bun at back of head. Women were expected traditionally to keep their heads covered (collector).

Cultural Context

Worn by Hakka women, both indoors and out, for everyday use, during the summer.
