Description

A straight adze made from an old file with a D-shaped wooden handle lashed on with cedar bark. The blade is still fairly sharp, and it appears the metal file may have been moved along the length of the adze as it required sharpening. The end of the handle is slightly flared as if it has been struck with a hammer.; Good

Context

The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; D-shaped adzes were used by carvers when making wooden objects such as totem poles, the adze could be used for roughing out the figures or for smoothing the surface on the finished item. The flared end of the adze suggests it has been used with ahammer, as in the manner of a chisel (G.Crowther).
