Description
Loom consisting of three horizontal pieces of wood with a partial weaving and a toothed comb-like wooden tool with a pointed handle. The weaving is red with blue and green stepped triangle design, the tips of the triangles not quite meeting at the centre, with two off-white triangles at the centre and two more at the sides as well as an off-white band above and below the design.
Narrative
The documentation from the Sisters of Saint Ann Museum (SSA) says this was collected by A. Cowan in New Mexico, in 1929. It was believed to be 40 years old at the time. An attached label reads: "Navajo rug - all rugs tell a tale. This 'Chiquita' (little girl or bride) New Mexico, 1889."
Specific Techniques
Vegetable dyes were used. According to old documentation from the SSA, rugs were made out in the open.
