Description

Food bowl with convex sides, the two longer sides with a top edge that scoops down at the centre and the two shorter sides with top edges that arch upwards. Each side and the base is made from a different piece of wood, and the top edges are painted red and inset with off-white opercula shells. The sides of the dish are painted with designs in black and red.

Narrative

Heiltsuk style dish, previously owned by a Tsimshian woman. The purchase receipt from the Gift Shop described this as a Bella Coola food dish, that came from a woman whose father was from Port Simpson. The previous owner is listed as Alice Wilson, who was said to be a Chief's daughter from Lax Kw'alaams (Tsimshian). The maker of the dish, Carpenter, was Heiltsuk. The 'Totem Pole Gift Shop' was located in Prince Rupert.
