Knowledge shared by institutions

Carpenter was a member of the ’Qvuqvayaitxv tribe, born in the Heiltsuk village of ’Qvuzvai in 1841. He belonged to the Blackfish clan and had the privilege of representing his family’s crest—an eagle (from his mother’s side) over a killer whale (from his father’s side)—on traditional ceremonial regalia and other carved and painted items. Although he never signed his works, his distinctive style is easily recognized.
