Description

Vest with rectangular shape and woven design of vertical bands of geometric design in red and black. Bands of yellow, red, off-white and brown on the sides, and a band of black, yellow, red and purple embroidered geometric pattern along the bottom edge on the reverse. Fringe along bottom edge.

Specific Techniques

Main body of vest woven with stripes of continuous supplementary weft patterning against a warp-faced weave alternating with stripes of warp-faced weave. Difficult to tell if supplementary weft patterning is songket (supplementary weft patterning technique) or sungkit (supplementary weft patterning technique with aid of a needle). Striped side borders and front facing panel plain warp-faced weave. Back lower panel of vest woven in bands of tapestry weave (slit tapestry) with alternating bands of twining. Front panel of vest cut and hand-stitched with cotton interfacing fabric for front opening and neckline. Sides of vest crudely hand-stitched under armhole openings to close. Bast fibre ties at front opening have been twisted and knotted through woven border to secure.
