Description

Length of bamboo with a small , tube-like piece protruding at a forty-five degree angle from the centre.

History Of Use

Such water pipes were smoked by men and occasionally by women, primarily elderly people. At the time of collection (1980) they were rarely seen in Hong Kong and Macao. To smoke the pipe, the user put shreds of tobacco in the small tube and put water in the larger tube from the top. He or she lit the tobacco with a stick of burning incense, and puffed on the pipe through the hole on the top.

Narrative

From a shop in Macao. Mrs. Yau Chan, Shek-ying, of Kwan Mun Hau Village, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, explained how these water pipes were used.
