Description

Plain twined weaving (two strand) with black and natural strands and with both natural strands; also has a variety of twilled weave (known as skip stitch) along top border; five bands of alternating dark and natural weft; top border of radiating chevron twill design.

Narrative

The collector (pre-1932) had tagged this as having been collected in Alert Bay, but by style it appears to be of Haida origin. The basket may have been mislabelled by the collector, or it might have ended up in a Kwakwaka'wakw community through trade or intermarriage.
