Description

Small square folded bag with woven strap, tied at apex with fringed ends extending out. Three dark pink, dark green, yellow and neon orange double pompoms are attached to each lower corner and the centre. The edging on three sides is orange. The central design is on a neon pink background and is composed of repeating M to W-shaped zigzags in dark blue outlined in orange. Strap has alternating sections of pink and orange, with repeating sections of four thin red lines through and red edging; folded in half along length; ends stitched to upper corners of bag. There are two snap closures inside the bag.

Collected by Dr. Hope MacLean while she was doing fieldwork with the Huichol, 1992-1995.

Cultural Context

The Wixáritari are known to the larger world as the Huichol, however that is not the name they use to refer to themselves.
