Doll3201/4

Fabric doll. Doll is made of brown polyester, dressed in a suit of dark green cotton with a red belt. Large pockets decorate the front, and a matching green bag is slung over the right shoulder. A silver chain drapes from right shoulder to left hip. Facial features are stitched thread, with a red mouth and white and black eyes. Over the black hair is a Basotho style hat, made of thick woven plant fibre. The hat comes to a point at top, where there is a loop.

Strainer3201/3

Strainer is tubular in shape, long, woven of twisted sedge (loli) fibres, with strands tied off at top, and bunched and tied at bottom. A loop is incorporated in this tie, from which to hang the strainer.

Figure3201/2

Wire toy person riding a two-wheeled bicycle. Thick metal wire is used to make wheels, pedals and rear handle. Thinner wire is wrapped around the wheels and used for the bicycle handles and upper construction. Rider is made of a wire under-form, which is heavily wrapped with thin plastic in blue and white, creating the shape of a human. Figure grips the bike handles, and legs are bent at the knees to reach the pedals. When the bicycle is propelled forward by the handle the pedals move, causing the legs to pump up and down.

Toy Car3201/1

Toy vehicle made of clothes hangers and typewriter ribbon spools as wheels. Represents a mini-bus, with moveable wheels, a sliding side door, a middle seat that lifts to allow passengers into the back, and a moving luggage rack at top. Construction is open, with wires suggesting walls and seats. Coat hangers are lashed together with wraps of thinner wire.

Doll representing a woman carrying a baby. Doll is made of brown fabric and has short black hair. Her facial features are stitched on with thread. She has long thin eyebrows, small eyes, a straight nose and smiling mouth. Eyebrows are done in black, eyes are white and black, nose and mouth done in pink. She is wearing a Basotho-style hat, woven out of plant fibre. The hat is conical with a wide circular brim and loop on top. Hat is stitched to head along forehead. She is dressed in a white short sleeve blouse and red skirt. Both items have curvilinear designs across them, done in black. Skirt also has floral motifs and repeating pattern of Basotho-style hats. Skirt has a back opening and a manufacturer’s mark(?) is printed along the bottom edge. Woman has a white, yellow and brown checkered and striped blanket wrapped around her shoulders, secured with a safety pin. Tucked in the blanket, on her back, is a baby covered in a white and green geometric patterned cloth, with a central house design. Baby is made from brown fabric and has small eyes and a smiling mouth stitched on in white thread. Doll is attached to a white metal stand.

Hat3477/2

Woven conical hat with braided circular brim. Hat is done in four sections of tight weave with openwork in between each section. The first openwork band, made of "X" shaped designs, is bordered on either side with dyed dark purple grass. Top of hat is crowned with a tapering cylinder, with diagonal patterned openwork sides. Four interlocking loops overtop and around cylinder. Inside of the hat, there is a loosely woven band to fit on a head.
