Pipe2948/136 a-b

Wooden pipe. The larger piece (part a) is decorated on the middle third with two thin bands of painted, cross-hatched design on either side of a reddish middle panel featuring intertwined abstract designs. At the centre of these design are triangles containing hourglass shapes. The designs are outlined in dark brown pigment and filled in with many parallel horizontal lines. At one end of part (a) the wood is coloured darker than the rest of this piece and wrapped in a thick band of synthetic fibre. Part b is undecorated aside from a small band of stylized ‘v’ shapes. There are ash remains inside both parts. Both parts have tape wrapped around them, one at the end, the other at midsection.

Large mask made of cardboard with a protruding nose, red designs on the face, and horns on the forehead. Large headdress consisting of a tall white cone-shaped cardboard hat and circular cutout pieces on top of the mask, surrounded by multi-coloured streamers. Cantonese Opera Umbrella2967/50 a-b

Bamboo umbrella frame. Frame consists of a thick centre piece holding a round top that supports 14 extendable ribs connected at their bottoms by cotton strips tied to each end. Inner wooden supports are attached high up on the ribs, as well as to a sliding circle that moves up and down the centre piece in order to extend the umbrella. The handle at the bottom end is covered in black cloth tape. A painted gold top piece (part b) is attached to the umbrella by a nail.

Ornament2948/121

White and light green feathers tied to sticks. Tiny plant fibres are wrapped around the feathers on the sticks to hold them in place. Small down-like feathers are at the base of the ornament with larger feathers at the top. There are two long white feathers with black spots at the very top. The sticks holding the feathers are tightly tied in a bundle with a rigid cloth tape.

Horn Container2956/255

Goat horn container. Yellow-brown horn with round metal piece at pointed end and leather band at rim with dark gold-toned studs. Twisted leather thong strung on a chain and a small wooden plug attached with a leather thong at rim. Horn surface is polished.
