Burden BasketA3408

Large flared, rectangular coiled cedar root basket (bifurcated stitches). Most of basket is imbricated in cat-tail grass (?) background with vertical geometric scroll design in two parallel bands of red, and dark cherry bark. At rim are intervals of dark cherry bark stitches. On each long side is a black cherry bark cross between the vertical pattern. On lower portion of basket are "cluster of flies" checkerboard bands of red cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?), and dark cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?).

Lunch BasketA3121 a-b

Basket (part a) and lid (part b) constructed using simple interlocking coiled work with bifurcated stitches on the sides. Parallel slat base and lid construction with reinforced edges. Overcast rim and lid with indented flange. Decorated with partial imbrication on the sides and beading on the lid. Sides of the basket (part a) feature two continuous wave bands (with variation) with an extending arc around the entire basket,one in red and the other in black. The lid (part b) has its circumference beaded in a double row of black while its interior is beaded in a series of double red stitches.

Baby CarrierA3127

Black coiled cedar root cradle with a splint rim decorated with beading in red cherry bark with four stitches showing and one under. The bottom half of the sides have a series of beaded chevrons in red cherry bark and cat-tail grass. The top of the sides have very fine beading in a staggered chevron pattern and also with a small three diagonal design near the end. The foot end is undecorated. Interlocking coiled work and bifurcated stitches with parallel slat base construction (splint row at base). Splint overcast rim has beading. The slats are quite large, almost 1 inch wide.

Basketry hat with brim of a mixed twined weave -chevron twilled design in diagonal twined weave (also known as 'skip-stitch') against ground of plain twined weave. Crown has a three strand twined weave with top of crown being mostly in plain twined weave (i.e. 2-strand twined weave). Inner hat band: diagonal twined weave. Colours: red, green, black.

HatA3239

Basketry hat with painted designs and a flared brim. The warps are made of red cedar bark and a small square of checkerboard plaiting is present at the top. The hat is woven of triangle sedge grass, using double strand twining. The warps are divided after several rows and the weaving becomes finer. Green-dyed grass has been used in several areas as an accent combined with the use of three strand twining. The painted design is of a male figure with hands upraised, flanked on either side by fish or whale figures. The paint is a dark green colour and badly faded. The rim of the hat is finished with dyed grass and a black yarn-like material. The hat has a cap-shaped liner woven into its interior. The liner is diagonally twined.

Coiled basket (parts a-f) with bifurcated stitches; parallel splint base construction; partially imbricated. The design consists of geometric shapes (two per side, one per end); two rows of discrete triangles in red on plain ground; rim is beaded. Parts b-d are square shaped sections of a bended branch that wrapped around the top of the basket. There are two rawhide ties (parts e-f) that used to attach to the outside.

The design consists of discrete vertical, triangular patterns and a checkerboard zigzags around rim; base is beaded in bullrush. Four string ties attached to a branch that encircles the basket and held on by twine.
