Kakinuma was born in Japan in 1908 and came to Vancouver, Canada in 1937 at the age of 29. In 1947 he graduated with Honours from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. From 1948-1950 he attended the Art Students League, in New York. He went on to became a celebrated ceramics potter, and was a pottery instructor at the University of B.C., alongside Olea Davis, c. 1956-1962 and 1965-1969.
