Otterlifter, also known as Cyot, was Cherokee but was born in the Pacific Northwest, lived and worked in British Columbia, and eventually was adopted by Tlingit people. He began his art full time in 1964 and continued until his death in 1999. He worked in wood carving and as a silversmith. (Biographical information from the "Cowan's Auctions" website.)
