Mary Mariq Kuutsiq was born in the Back River area, later moving to Baker Lake. Kuutsiq was a textile artist whose work has been exhibited across Canada and the USA since 1974. Nelson Mandela was presented with one of her wall hangings by the Canadian Governor General in 2006.
