Esaias ("Esse") Poggatz died at the age of 69 in 2006. He was the son of a well-known Sami author, Andreas Poggats, and showed a great interest in handicrafts from a young age. During the years 1967-1971 he worked as a Sami handicrafts adviser. From 1977-78 he was a crafts teacher at Linköping University and Gällivare Sami school. During the years 1995-1996 he was head teacher at the Sami Education Centre. Poggatz was one of his nation's leading Sami craftsmen, well known in Sweden. Despite his great skill and proficiency he was a humble and humorous man who shared his professional expertise with promising young woodworkers, as he wanted Sami crafts to develop and survive for future generations. He was the first Sami craftsman who was awarded the Arts Grants Committee Grant, going on to receive the scholarship several times.
