Joseph Richardson Jr. was a member of the famous Richardson family of Philadelphia silversmiths, whose output in the mid-1700s was prodiguous. In 1777 Joseph Jr. and his brother, Nathaniel, inherited the family business, which had been established by their grandfather. In 1790 Joseph began to work without his brother stamping his silver with his JR mark. In 1795, Joseph Jr. was appointed assayer to the Mint, a position that he held for 35 years. Artist flourished dates 1777-1795.
