Peter Pearse was born in Vernon, BC. He received a B.S.F. in forestry from UBC (1956) and a Ph.D. (1962) in economics from Edinburgh University in Scotland. He returned to UBC to teach in the Department of Economics in 1962. His research interests have focused on natural resource economics, particularly in the development and management of the forest and fishing industries. Pearse served as Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Forest Resources in BC (1975-1976) and Pacific Fisheries (1981-1982). He also chaired an Inquiry on Federal Water Policy (1984-1985). In 2013 he donated $250,000 to UBC’s faculty of Forestry to fund awards for Indigenous students.
