Leading ukiyo-e artist of the later Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best known as creator of the woodblock print series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," which includes the internationally recognized print, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". Hokusai was known by many names (approx. 30) during his lifetime. Active dates 1779-1849.
