Knowledge shared by institutions

Barbara was born in Hazelton in 1936, but she and her siblings were moved to Vancouver for schooling. She graduated from King Edward High School in 1951, moving on to UBC where she met and married Alec Robertson in 1955. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts and was an accomplished artist, winning a commission to design many of the First Nations' commemorative coins for Expo 86. Barbara's grandfather C. Victor Smith ran a trade store in Old Hazelton in the early 1900s, through which he apparently built up a large collection of Gitxsan materials. In 1963 the collection passed to his daughter and her husband (Barbara's parents), then in 1989, when her father died, it passed to Barbara.
