Knowledge shared by institutions

João Manuel Esteves was once the most renowned and experienced mask maker of Ousilão. He began making paper masks as a child, before in later life becoming a farmer and storyteller. He attributed the inspiration behind his masks to dreams and the forms he thought were inherent in the pieces of wood he found on his land. He felt ambiguous about some of his masks and attributed them malevolent qualities derived from the animals they sometimes depicted. Esteves had been the only mask maker in Ousilhão for a time, until he trained two others, including José Vas.
