Jin Nong 金農 (1687-1763) was born in Hangzhou, China, and was a calligrapher, painter, poet, and scholar. His literary and courtesy names include Jin Dongxin (金冬心) and Shoumen (寿門). He was one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou (揚州八怪)—a group of artists active in Yangzhou during the Qianlong era (1735-96) of the Qing dynasty, whose calligraphy and painting were innovative in style. Early in his life, he specialized in clerical script, but later he created a new type of script, known as “lacquer script,” derived from early medieval Chinese stele inscriptions.
