Born in Sandspit, Boyko is a member of the Haida Raven clan. Boyko began carving in his early teens, first in argillite, then silver and gold. He apprenticed with artists Bill Reid, Alfie Collison and Morris White. Although mainly known for his hand-carved jewelry, he has also completed major pole commissions, including a 40-foot pole for the Skidegate Museum and, in 2007, a pole for the collection of artist Damien Hirst.
