Gerry Marks is the grandson of John Marks, a silversmith and argillite carver. In 1971, he trained with Freda Diesing at Prince Rupert. Marks worked with Robert Davidson on the Edenshaw monument commissioned by the National Historic Sites in Masset. "...Gerry realized that it is important to constantly study the old masters, for the subtleties of their designs and craftsmanship mean more as you reach a higher level of expertise" (NWC Indian Artists Guild, 1978). He was twenty when he met Bill Reid "who urged him to seek his roots by learning about Haida art". Marks did a great deal of reading and self teaching.
