Richard Sumner was raised in Alert Bay. He took up carving in 1974 at age 18; in 1978 he was hired as part of a team to carve the beams and planks for the bighouse at the U'mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay. He trained with Doug Cranmer whom he credits for refining his skills and giving him direction as a carver. During the 1980s he assisted with the replica of the Wakas pole located at Brockon Oval in Stanley Park. He moved to Vancouver in 1986, and in the early 1990s devoted himself to carving fulltime.
