Richard Hunt was born in 1951, in Alert Bay. In the early 1950's, his family moved to Victoria where his father, Henry was a carver at the then Provincial Museum. He learned carving from his father and brother Tony. Richard became chief carver at the Provincial Museum and is particularily renowned for his masks which are widely represented in the active dance collections of the Southern Kwagiutl. He is also an accomplished dancer and states that dancing has had a profound impact on his mask carving.
