John laford was born in 1954 on Manitolin Island. He works within the Woodlands Art Tradition pioneered by Norval Morrisseau. His earliest work was inspired by the petrogyphs at Agawa Rock on Lake Superior. As well as traditional inspirations, Laford has explored more general, contemporay issues of man/land relations and has sought inspiration as far a field as the Northwest Coast. Laford's works form part of the permanent collections of public institution such as the McMichael Canadian Collection, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
