Knowledge shared by institutions

In the late 1940s Ellen Neel's family began helping her carve souvenir totem poles and other small carvings to sell to tourists in Vancouver. The City of Vancouver even gave her a place in Stanley Park to carve and sell their carvings. Some of the model poles are stamped on the back "Made in Canada by Ellen Neel & the Totem Carvers - Kwakiutl Indians".
