In the late 1940s Ellen Neel's family began helping her carve souvenir totem poles and other small carvings to sell to tourists in Vancouver. The City of Vancouver even gave her a place in Stanley Park to carve and sell their carvings. Some of the model poles are stamped on the back "Made in Canada by Ellen Neel & the Totem Carvers - Kwakiutl Indians".
