Wayne Ngan was born in a small village near Guangzhou, China, and emigrated to Canada when he was thirteen. He graduated with honours from the Vancouver School of Art in 1963, beginning a prolific career in pottery, painting and sculpture. In 1969 he moved to Hornby Island. Ngan's practice has been recognized as instrumental in the development of the well-known West Coast Modern aesthetic that continues to influence ceramic artists in BC.
