Norval Morrisseau, CM RCA (1932 - 2007) was an Anishinaabe artist from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation. He was a self-taught artist who originated the style commonly referred to as the "Woodlands Style" or "Woodland School". His Anishinaabe name, “Miskwaabik Animiiki”, means Copper Thunderbird. His first exhibition was in 1962, at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto, marking the first time an Indigenous artist had shown work in a contemporary art gallery in Canada. Morrisseau was a key member of Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. (PNIAI), also known as the "Indian Group of Seven". He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1973), and in 1978 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.
