Talirunili claimed to be born in 1906 "in the land of Kugaluk, in a place called Neahungnik," and passed away in 1976. He was one of the founders of the Puvirnituq print shop and is well known for his migration scenes. The Povungnituk print catalogue from 1977 says "This adventure [the migration] happened to about forty of the Povungnituk people who were crossing from the mainland to some islands (Joe says the Ottawa islands) in Hudson's Bay. Their sealskin boat was split on a reef and Joe was one of the few survivors. This was Joe's favorite story." In 1975 he had a one man show at the Inuit Gallery in Toronto and carved two dozen migration scenes for this show. These were accompanied by small pieces of paper on which he would write the name of everyone he could remember (Povungnituk Print Catalogue 1977).
