Knowledge shared by institutions

Mutisya Munge was from the Wamunyu area of Machakos County, in Kenya. He is said to have started carving ceremonial sticks before 1914, but apparently he learned about figurative carving during the First World War, while serving alongside the Zaramo in the East Africa Carrier Corps in Tanganyika (Tanzania). When he returned home after the war he became a full-time carver, creating figurative works that were popular in the newly emerging Kenyan tourist market of the 1920s and 30s. He is often cited as the founder of the Kamba tourist art market in Kenya.
