Oscar (Oskar) Bondy was a Jewish man born and living in Vienna who owned sugar factories in Czechoslovakia before WWII. Bondy had owned a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and works of decorative art, which was seized and expropriated with the "Anschluss" (annexation of Austria) to Nazi Germany in 1938. Bondy and his wife escaped to Switzerland and then to the USA. He died in New York in 1944. Following WWII (c. 1946), much of his collection was restituted to his widow; in 1949 she apparently sold most of it at auction, in New York.
