Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞) (aka Utagawa Toyokuni III 三代目歌川豊国/豊國) was a Japanese artist, who was one of the most prolific and successful artists of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in nineteenth century Japan. For a while, he was also briefly called Utagawa Toyokuni II (二代目歌川豊国・豊國), but Toyokuni I’s adopted son, Utagawa Toyoshige (歌川豊重) was officially Toyokuni II. Born Sumiza Shōgorō (角田庄五朗) in Tokyo (then Edo), he was called Sumida Shōzō (角田庄蔵). He entered the school of Utagawa Toyokuni I around 1800 as an apprentice. His gagō or artist names include Kunisada (国貞), Toyokuni (豊国), Gotōtei (五渡亭), Kōchōrō" (香蝶楼), Gepparō (月波楼), Kinraisha (琴雷舎), Ichiyūsai (一雄斎), Ichiyōsai (一陽斎), Kiō (喜翁), and his other pseudonyms include Bukiyō Matabei(不器用又平), Ukiyo Matahei (浮世又平) and Tsukiyo Kamahei (月喜代釜平).
