Utagawa Toyokuni I (Toyokuni I) (初代歌川豊国) was a ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period. He trained under Utagawa Toyoharu (歌川豊春), the founder of the Utagawa school. Among his pupils are Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞/aka Toyokuni III) and Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川国芳). Born in Tokyo, his real name was Kurahashi Kumakichi (倉橋 熊吉), and he was later called Kumaemon (熊右衛門). His gagō or artist names include Utagawa Toyokuni (歌川豊国), Utagawa Ichiyōsai (歌川 一陽斎), Ichiyōsai Toyokuni (一陽斎 豊国). Active dates c. 1788-1824.
