Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1949, Arluk (or Arlook) now lives in Arviat. He has also lived in Rankin Inlet, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Winnipeg and Churchill Manitoba. He took it upon himself to learn carving at age nine by watching his father, and his early works are influenced by the abstract approach to sculpting found in the work of carvers he was exposed to while he lived in Rankin Inlet from 1956 to 1975. Arlook often adds antler parts, in intricate formations, to his soapstone sculptures and is known for carving a variety of stone including the hard stone of Keewatin, soapstone (steatite) and pipestone (catlinite).
