Edna Howard Matthews was born in Toronto, ON. She married Methodist physician and missionary George E. Darby. They moved to Bella Bella around 1916, living there until his retirement in 1955. While there they ran the R.W. Large Memorial Hospital. Edna became actively involved in disseminating knowledge about the Heiltsuk Nation. During their time in Bella Bella, George and Edna assembled a collection of Heiltsuk belongings. The collection was purchased by the Valedictory Class of 1931 for UBC. It was held by the UBC Geological Museum until 1947, when it was transferred to the Museum of Anthropology. She died in Vancouver in 1971.
