Professor emeritus UBC, Geoffrey B. Hainsworth. Born in Bramley, Yorkshire in 1934, he attended the University of London, graduating in 1954 and obtained his PhD at the UofC, Berkeley, his thesis being classical theories of overseas development. He taught at Harvard 1958-1960, then spent 1960 to 1965 as a research fellow and instructor at the Australian National University in Canberra, doing research work in Papua New Guinea. He started at UBC in 1968, where he founded the Centre for Southeast Asia Studies, retiring as director in 2001. He also lived in Malaysia, Indonesia (early 1980s) and Vietnam (early 1990s) during his career, working with governmental agencies and universities.
