Thelma Sharp Cook. Alumna of the UBC Faculty of Education, Thelma graduated from UBC's first teaching class in secondary education, earning her BEd in 1958. She went on to complete two MA degrees and a PhD at Stanford University. In 1974 she joined the faculty at UBC as an Instructor in Social and Educational Studies and became Assistant Professor in 1975. Thelma was particularly proud of her part in the education of Indigenous young adults through the NITEP - Indigenous Teacher Education Program, having served as the program's second director and actively raised funds for Indigenous student awards. She served on the UBC Senate 1982-1987, and as governor and chair of the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation. After retirement she served as a member of the President’s Committee on Campus Enhancement, the UBC Dean of Education’s External Advisory Committee, and the UBC Advisory Committee on Heritage Policy.
