Michael (Mick) Henry was born in New Westminster, BC. He attended the Vancouver School of Art between 1957 and 1961. In 1963 he decided to travel to St. Ives, where Glenn Lewis helped him secure work at the Leach Pottery, first as a clay mixer, eventually as an apprentice. While at St.Ives, he met Leach, Shoji Hamada, John Reeve, Gwyn Hanssen-Pigott, and others. He returned to Vancouver in 1965. He was inspired during visits to Hornby Island by the rural practices of Heinz Laffin, Gerhard Kozel, and Wayne Ngan. By 1972 he opened Slug Pottery in Roberts Creek. In 1974 he was awarded a grant to travel and research potteries in England. In 1975 he arrived at St Ives and assisted Charmian Johnson in cataloguing and recording Leach’s Asian collection. By 1979, the back-to -the-land pottery studio became too onerous so Henry returned to Vancouver in 1980 and spent some time with David Lambert working in the public schools, supporting ceramic programs. He then switched to work doing medical illustration with Victor Doray at UBC, until 1987. [Information from D. Sloan, BC Ceramics website.]
